Diamond or Lump of Coal?? Which are you?

As I look at the future 2013 Season I am overwhelmed with mixed emotions. I have already had a busy Spring with riding lessons and horses in training. The last 6 years have been a time of extreme hardships physically and emotionally. The healing process has been grulling and long, but even in the midst of the hardships many positives and blessings have been produced through the trials. It is said that “when we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds under pressure.” Peter Marshall
My goal for 2013 is to embrace the pressure and look for the blessing that comes from it. Come with me on this new Season in my life! Don’t miss the exciting 2013 blog as a big announcement is coming soon!!
Jeremiah 8:7
Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration. But my people do not know the requirements of the Lord.

Daniel 2:21
He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

SPRING FEVER & HORSES!!!!! GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!

Wow!!  Do I ever have Spring Fever??  Winter here in Kansas will not go to sleep.  It is March 26, and we still have 8 plus inches of snow on the ground!!  Now it is melting and mud, mud, mud, FREEZE, ICE, then melt and mud, mud muddier.  So, do our horses get Spring fever???  I think so.  It is always a good idea to not just work your fresh Spring horse before riding, but if possible to find a dry place for the horse to roll, run, buck, and play BEFORE, that first Spring ride.  I know I am spoiled with the indoor arena at the R&D Ranch, it allows us to let our horses get out of the mud, snow, and let out all that couped up energy!  Sometimes we forget our horses like to play to and Winter can hinder our horses ability to let out all that energy.  The moment their feet hit that dry arena footing, they are ready to kick up their heels and GO!!

Trying to contain that energy just makes it harder for you and  I to get the horse to focus!  I like to set them free first in the arena and let them get it out of their system, BEFORE I ask them to focus and be under control!!  HAPPY SPRING!!!  I KNOW IT IS GOING TO PUSH WINTER AWAY SOON!!

Lacy and New Beginnings!! with Cindy Branham

Go to http://youtu.be/OBXOyiqof-Y , to watch video of Lacy!!
As I look at Spring being just around the corner, I look forward to warm breezes, new life, and re-newed life.   It is a time of new beginnings!!  I want to introduce you to “Lacy” I talked about her in last weeks blog.  She is an 8 year old quarter horse mare that has been given the title of “dangerous” and needing a  “last chance”.  …I have been working with her for about a month and I can tell you I truly believe she has just been misunderstood in her past.  Though she is not at a confident horse, she is very courageous so very willing to understand what I want of her.  She is looking for direction and I hope she will continue that path.  What makes a horse fall into a situation where they have only one more chance to be considered trainable? “I believe the answer lies in the persons heart that helps give that horse, not it’s “last chance”; but a New Start.  A heart that reflects grace and puts the past behind offering New Direction.” Lacy is 8 years old and has a history of bucking people off and being unpredictable and explosive; I have spent the majority of the last month building trust and confidence with Lacy with ground work and just simply spending time with her socializing her to new people, horses, and surroundings.  As she discovers that there is a world outside of her fear she is becoming a much quieter and more predictable horse.  With time I believe she will be a great mount and partner for her owner.  If you have a horse that needs a New Start, Ask your horse this question, “ Are you brave enough to ask?”.  Then ask yourself these questions, “Are you strong enough to listen?  Are you humble enough to learn what your horse is telling you?  Cindy Branham & her Mustangs sponsored by: Tucker Trail Saddles & Cavalo Horse and Rider Inc.

How do we calm the storm in our horse? with Cindy Branham

Psalm 107:29a He stilled the storm to a whisper;

Snow, snow, and snow.  Here in Kansas we have been slammed with 20 plus inches of snow in the last week.  I can’t image having this much on a regular basis.  On a beautiful sunny day life seems so much more simple.  Waking up to sunshine, feeding happy horses in a green pasture.  Saddling up with the options of going just about any where we please.  But, when it is storming our whole perspective changes.  Getting up means facing clearing  the walk to the barn before we ever get to chores, grumpy horses who just want to eat and go outside, no place to ride.  Worry about family and them staying safe on the roads and so on……… How do we make it through the storms with happiness????? Its all about how we react to the storm.
When dealing with horses, many stormy situations can present themselves.  Right now I am working with a “mis-understood” quarter horse.  She is here on her “last chance” to be trained.  Her owner doesn’t want to see her sold, so he has given me an oppertunity to try to calm the storm within her.  She is nervous and scared and reacts very quickly to many things.  In the past differnt training methods have not helped her, and so she has continued to buck people off and to not be trusted.  When I work with this horse I have to have an attitude of inderferenc to her emotions of being afraid or nervous.  I can not allow my human emotions of fear or frustration to play a part in my cues to her.  I want to reward her for any quiet/ calm response to my cues no matter what speed she is going.  Her attitude depends on my cues and especially my release of the cue to reward her for the correct response.  She is starting to realise that there are “right answers” and so she is starting to feel safe and build confidence.  She has many evasive behaviors that she has learned when under saddle, but my job is to not respond emotionally to her, but get her to change behavior with a behavior I want, then reward her for the good  behavior.  I hope to be able to break through the communication barrier she has had with humans in the past and give her the opportunity to have a successful working relationship with her owner.

Psalm 107:29
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea[a] were hushed.

Below is a story I got from Face Book.  It really touched my heart on what kind of person I want to be as a horseman and as a simple human.
Grandmother says… Carrots, Eggs, or Coffee; “Which are you?” A young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard fo…r her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose. Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, “Tell me what do you see?” “Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied. She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they got soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The granddaughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The granddaughter then asked. “What’s the point, grandmother?” Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity–boiling water–but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed the water. “Which are you?” she asked her granddaughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?” Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate to another level? —AUTHOR UNKNOWN —

Desensitised……… Good or bad? Right or Wrong? Natural Horsemanship with Cindy Branham

“We have to expect the horse to do what is “natural” and educate the horse to do what we want.” — Cindy Branham

It was interesting this morning on CBS they were highlighting an “opinion” from an expert who has studied mass murderers such as the Sandy school shooter.   One of his comments made me think about humans and horses and how they correlate.  He said, “playing extreme hours of violent video games does not influence a person to become violent, unless they already have strong tendencies towards being violent.” He talked how such violent stimuli can desensitise anyone to violence, but does not “make” someone become violent.  As a mom of teens who love war video games, that helped me a little with my my tendency to NOT let them play them.  But the truth is what is in our hearts and minds is what  influences our actions and our ability to control our thoughts and actions when it comes to right and wrong. What we are taught helps us discern the behavior we are going to emulate.

As I work with so many different breeds and personalities of horses I have found that the same method of training may work for one horse, but not the other.  I also find that people have a tendency when working with their horses, they don’t look to the heart and mind of the horse, but only the actions of the horse.  Many times the horses actions are a direct influence of our behavior; and what we reward or release on.

If we approach a spooky/scared horse with slow holding our breath movements they will respond to our hesitation and mirror our actions.  If we approach the horse with to fast or  quick movement then the horse will mirror that.  However, if we look at how the horse is behaving and how they respond to their fear we can approach the horse with an understanding that the horse will mirror what we want them to.  Say what???? You say…..

It is so important to reward the behavior we want.  That behavior is not just actions, it is what is going on in the horses mind to.  When I am working to “desensitise” a horse I am wanting the horse to mentally and physically accept the stimuli that they are unsure of.  So that means I keep the pressure on the horse, whether a plastic bag or even me, whatever is making the horse unsure/afraid until the horse relaxes something.  At first it might just be the horses feet stay still instead of moving, as I continue working this method eventually I am not just releasing the horse when the feet are still but when the horses head drops down and the eye softens and relaxes.   I never keep accelerating the pressure if the horse is getting more scared.  The idea is to keep steady pressure that causes the horse to be aware and yet doesn’t overwhelm the horse.  Then I look for a part of the horse to relax and take the stimuli away.  This will influence the horse’s calming idea of thought and desensitise his “fear reaction” to the stimuli.  I do   not try to erase the horses  instinct.  I create a mirror of relax and quiet and re-program the horses instinct reflecting the behavior I want.

When working with  a horse that is rather quiet and not afraid of stimuli, then this lesson will not take very long and is quite easy.  However, a horse that is prone to being more spooky/fearful and in tune to his flight instinct, then this can be a longer process that needs to be addressed with anything that spooks the horse.  If the person just tries to “desensitise” without focusing on the horses mind set, then you can get the horse to not move his feet, but continue to be afraid and create a more spooky horse.  I find that people try to either overstimulate fearful horses or run the fear out of them.  With the horse that is easily overstimulated this creates more anxiety and worse flight reactions.

So, if you have a fearful horse be sure to create a mirror that gives you the reflection you want.  This will lead to a more confident and quiet horse that can be a wonderful partner.  Every horse wants to have a quiet spirit, we just have to help them to find it when working with us.

Take for instance a scared wild mustang compared to a domesticated spooky hot horse.  Both horses have the same instincts of flight yet one is fearful because it knows it could get eaten by humans; the other has had its instincts polluted and is afraid of humans or stimuli but doesn’t know why.  The first horse is much easier to reflect the behavior we want; the second is harder, but can be taught to reflect the calm and quiet horse we all long for.  It is all a matter of the heart.  Theirs and ours.

Psalm 51:10 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Check out this video of the Hutchison Correctional Wild Mustang Demo that Tucker the Mustang and I were able to  participate in at Equifest of Kansas.  These wild horses are a great example of a “renewed and steadfast heart” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jhcRQzBCSE

Letting Go of our Fears & A SPOTLIGHT ON TUCKER TRAIL SADDLES

Psalm 130:1-4

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord: O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.  If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness….

This week a funny, but instinctive thing happened to Andy the Mustang.  A plastic bag went flying across his paddock, he was spooked but went to investigate.  He reached down and grabbed it with his teeth.  Then he realised now the plastic bag was attacking him so being in fear/flight mode he clenched his teeth even tighter and proceeded to bolt, rear, try to strike the bag, and not even think about just opening his mouth and letting go of the bag.  He eventually did drop it, but stood there stunned that the bag had actually  stopped attacking him.  LOL

“How many times do we hold on to things that bring us down?  We hold on to gudges, guilt, childhood issues, low self-worth.  Like Andy, we’re seldom aware of why we keep holding on.  Often, we subconsciously fear that forgiving others or ourselves might expose us to being wounded– or wounding others–again.  So, we hold on to those feelings of unforgiveness, keeping a close eye on the shortcomings in ourselves and those around us, to ensure the “guilty” have learned their lesson.

God sees the plastic bag you’re clutching.  It’s safe to drop it now. Trust that God will gently remove your fears and comfort and protect you  In His perfect wisdom, He’ll deal with those who have hurt you and with those you’ve hurt. ” Parts taken from “Daily seeds from Who Walk in Faith” Daily Devotional

This meant a lot to me today!!  I hope it does for you to!!
